One Development Action

PURPOSE: Team members identify one action they can take in the next 30 days to build a skill or capability needed to help them achieve their career interests.

Time: 2 Hours

STEP 1Send the following email to your team members: 

It is critical for each of us take action to build the skills and capabilities needed to be successful in our careers. Therefore, I would like each of you to identify one action you are willing to take in the next 30 days to build a skill or capability you need to achieve your individual career goals. For example, you may want to meet with someone in the organization to learn what he or she did to be successful in a similar role, or you may want to schedule time in the area you are interested in moving to.

When responding, please indicate the skill or capability you want to build, the development action you want to take, and how this action will help support your career interests.

After you identify your one development action, we’ll discuss the next steps for taking the action forward. I look forward to hearing from you.

STEP 2: After receiving the responses, touch base with each team member to discuss the steps you and the team member must take to implement the action.

Note: If the development action is not realistic, work with the team member to identify an action that can be implemented and achieve similar results.
