SOLUTION:

Prioritizing Team Needs

PURPOSE: Team members identify their top 3 resource needs.  Based on team goals and initiatives, the team prioritizes their resource needs, and determines which needs must be met first.

Time: 2 Hours

Before a team meeting:

STEP 1: Ask your team members to identify the top 3 resources (materials, equipment, etc.) they need in order to be successful in their job.  For each resource, team members should do the following:

  1. Describe why the resource is needed
  2. Outline the impact the resource will have on the team’s performance
  3. Identify what it will take to obtain the resource (time, money, etc.)
  4. Rank their top 3 resource needs in order of priority

During a team meeting:

STEP 2: Team members share their top 3 resource needs with the entire team.

STEP 3: Based on current projects and deliverables, as well as available resources, the team prioritizes which resource needs must be met first.  The team should try to meet as many #1 needs for each of the different team members as possible.

If a team member cannot have any of his or her top 3 needs met, the team should try to identify a different solution to help that team member be successful in their role.
