Time: 2 Hours
Before you meet with your team:
STEP 1: Clearly outline the types of rewards available to team members, such as bonuses, pay increases, comp time, or gift awards. You may want to speak with your HR representative to ensure you have complete and accurate information.
STEP 2: Define the requirements needed to trigger each type of reward, such as performance level ratings, goal and objective achievements, job role, and/or length of service. Again, you may want to talk with your HR representative to ensure the information is complete and accurate.
Note: These requirements are not always “black and white”. You may be asked “what if” questions from your team members—individual questions should be discussed at another time. You may also have to share “reward examples” such as, “If this type of result was achieved by a team member, he or she may receive _____ type of reward.”
Meet with your team:
STEP 3: Share with your team your desire to create a better understanding of your organization’s reward system, and what it will take to trigger the different rewards.
STEP 4: Outline the different rewards and the criteria used to trigger each reward. Be sure to discuss how the criteria should be used as a guideline, and not as a set of strict rules.
Note: Rewards can be a difficult topic to discuss. Remember, the purpose of this meeting is to provide a general overview of the reward system. If individual concerns arise, ask the team member to discuss the issue with you off-line.
