STEP 1: In a team meeting, identify the 3 to 5 critical skills or knowledge all team members must have to successfully achieve the team goals. (e.g., team procedures or software skills).
STEP 2: For each skill, rate the team’s overall level of performance.
On a scale of 1 to 10, what level of performance does the team currently deliver?
1 = We have no ability to perform the skill
10 = We perform the skill perfectly every time
STEP 3: For each skill, identify the team’s current resources that are available to help build the team’s capability to successfully execute the skill (e.g., job aids, training courses, “in-house” experts).
STEP 4: Based on the team’s current level of performance and available resources, determine the following:
- What skills or capabilities do we need to build with speed?
- What additional resources do we need to put in place to ensure all team members have the knowledge and skills needed for success?
- What actions do we need our manager to take to help build the needed knowledge and skills?
- What actions do team members need to take to build the necessary knowledge and skills?
