Critical Team Skills

PURPOSE: With your team, identify the critical skills or knowledge all team members must build to successfully achieve the team goals and work priorities.

Time: 2 Hours

STEP 1In a team meeting, identify the 3 to 5 critical skills or knowledge all team members must have to successfully achieve the team goals. (e.g., team procedures or software skills).

STEP 2: For each skill, rate the team’s overall level of performance.

On a scale of 1 to 10, what level of performance does the team currently deliver?

1 = We have no ability to perform the skill

10 =  We perform the skill perfectly every time

STEP 3: For each skill, identify the team’s current resources that are available to help build the team’s capability to successfully execute the skill (e.g., job aids, training courses, “in-house” experts).

STEP 4: Based on the team’s current level of performance and available resources, determine the following:

  1. What skills or capabilities do we need to build with speed?
  2. What additional resources do we need to put in place to ensure all team members have the knowledge and skills needed for success?
  3. What actions do we need our manager to take to help build the needed knowledge and skills?
  4. What actions do team members need to take to build the necessary knowledge and skills?
