SOLUTION:

Tough Issues Talk

PURPOSE: Build five to ten minutes into dinner or family time to discuss difficult issues with the whole family.

Time: < 30 Minutes

STEP 1: Set aside 5 to 10 minutes at dinner to discuss a difficult or tense family or household issue (e.g., poor academic performance, inappropriate behaviors, cleanliness, etc.).

STEP 2: Select the first issue you will discuss with your family. Perhaps you can bring something up that applies to you so that your family won’t get defensive from the get-go.

STEP 3: In a family meeting perform the following:

  • Describe the issue
  • Present the information you know
  • Share your personal thoughts
  • Discuss the impact on individuals and the family as a whole

STEP 4: Ask your family members to share additional information and their own thoughts.

STEP 5: When the discussion is finished, ask the family to select an issue for the next meeting.
