SOLUTION:

Small Stuff Counts

PURPOSE: Recognize team members’ “smaller” achievements. Ask your team members to share the smaller actions and achievements of others that may have gone unnoticed but deserve to be recognized.

Time: 30 Minutes

STEP 1: Send the following email to your team.

“It is critical that we recognize all of our achievements. Often times, we tend to focus on the big achievements, but forget to recognize the smaller ones—yet they are just as important. This may include a team member lending a hand to help us complete a project, or someone working extra hours to help a client.

Please take a moment to think about your team members and their actions over the last two weeks:

What actions have your team members taken to support you in achieving your own goals and deliverables?

What team member actions have you witnessed that support the team’s performance?

What smaller, yet important, accomplishments have team members achieved?

Respond to this email by listing the team member actions or achievements although “smaller” in scale that should be recognized for the value they bring to the team.

When responding, list the team member’s name, the action or achievement, and the impact it created.”

STEP 2: In a team meeting, review the “small stuff” actions. Ask the team member who emailed the achievement to present it back to the team.

Note: After performing the “Small Stuff Counts” a few times, you may find that more and more “small stuff” is recognized day-to-day, week-to-week. However, you may still want to continue performing “Small Stuff Counts” emails to ensure the “small stuff” is always talked about in team meetings.
