SOLUTION:

It's Not
About You

PURPOSE: Spend time with your friends and family doing something for your community. Offer help to those who are less fortunate than you and build a new kind of connection with your loved ones.

Time: 1 Hour

STEP 1: Research different community projects or non-profits where you would like to volunteer. Find a cause that you all share an interest in or one that is particularly relevant to a friend or family member. It is important that each member involved believes in the cause you are giving back to, so make sure to have an intentional conversation to hear each person’s thoughts and opinions.

STEP 2: Make it a family affair. Schedule a date for you and your family/friends to help those in need. You could go through old toys, clothes, or household items and take a group trip to your local Goodwill, Arc, or other donation center. Help out at a soup kitchen or nursing home on a holiday or on an especially busy day. Look into opportunities through your local church or other religious center.

STEP 3: If children are going with you, use this as a teaching opportunity. Explain why you are doing the project, how it will positively affect others, and the importance of giving to those less fortunate than you. Help them better understand the concept of serving others, while getting them outside of “their world” to see how others live. Afterwards, have a conversation with the group about what each member learned, or something that was especially impactful. When people reflect on their own experiences it helps them to feel connected to the work they did and increases the likelihood of them serving again in the future.

STEP 4: When the day of the event arrives, start the morning with breakfast burritos or a hearty breakfast to give everyone good energy for the day. Make sure to bring water and snacks in case there is nothing provided for volunteers—you’ll want to maintain your strength and stamina so you can put your best face forward and remain positive all day.

STEP 5: Take pictures at the event and share with those who attended. You may also send a few to the organization where you volunteered so they can share their successes around volunteering efforts. Thank those who went with you and discuss or schedule the next way you can serve others together. Post it on Facebook or Instagram and challenge others to do the same. Pay it forward.
