Time: 30 Minutes
STEP 1: Set a goal for yourself to compliment at least one person every day. Ask yourself what you want to gain from this action or what you want to provide to the people you are complimenting. Be intentional and truthful with your compliments, and don’t let your own self-interest be the driving factor. Speak from the heart and you will be surprised at how often people return the favor.
STEP 2: Think of people who are extra deserving of a compliment:
- Is there a family member, friend, or co-worker who has been helpful to you?
- Is there a doorman, barista, or waiter who provides exceptional service with a smile?
- Is there someone who is working hard to lose weight and you notice them making progress?
- Is there a single mom who needs to hear that she is doing a great job?
- Is there a child who needs to hear that you see how hard they are working, or that you appreciate their help around the house?
STEP 3: Think about what you would like to say. If necessary, recite it a few time.
STEP 4: Start with a smile and sincerely thank them for brightening your day by what they have done. Be specific about what they are doing well, so they’ll know which behavior to repeat. If possible, use their name. People love hearing their name and respond well to positive reinforcement. Don’t stop at just one compliment for the day. After seeing one person brighten up at the sound of a compliment, you’ll want to have that effect on as many people as possible (and be ready to receive a compliment or two in return).
