Work-Life Balance Review

PURPOSE: As a manager or team lead, meet with each team member to discuss how well he or she is able to balance his or her work and personal life. This will go a long way toward retaining and satisfying your team. If you are not a manager or team lead, talk to your manager about the following points to better balance your work-life situation.

Time: < 1 Hour

STEP 1: Schedule a time to meet with each team member to discuss his or her work-life balance.

STEP 2: Before you meet with your team member, either in person, or via voicemail or email, ask your team member to think about the following:

  • On a scale of 1 to 5 (1 = all I do is work; 5 = I have the perfect balance between work and personal life), how would you rate your current work-life balance?
  • What personal activities would you like to do, but can’t, because of work?
  • In the last 6 months, what percentage of scheduled personal activities have you cancelled or rescheduled due to work priorities?
  • Are there particular projects impacting your work-life balance?
  • What ideas do you have to improve or maintain in your work-life balance?

STEP 3: Meet with the team member to discuss the questions above. As you create a clear picture of the team member’s work-life balance, be sure to remember the following:

  • You may need to manage expectations regarding the time needed for a particular project.
  • At times, the team member’s work-life balance may be out of balance, however, the goal should be to rebalance it once the project is complete.

STEP 4: Identify the actions both you and the team member must take to help create a balance between the team member’s work and personal life.
