Time: < 30 Minutes
STEP 1: Send a meeting notice for 10 minutes to your manager to discuss expectations for the next one to two months.
STEP 2: In the meeting notice, share the following information with your manager:
It is critical that I clearly understand what is needed in order to be successful. To help clarify expectations, I’d like to have a quick 10-minute discussion with you in the next two weeks. During this discussion, I’d like to create a mutual understanding of the actions I must take, and what I must deliver within the next 30 to 60 days.
I will be prepared to discuss (or I have noted below) the critical actions and deliverables (3 to 5) I believe I must achieve over the next 30 to 60 days.
I look forward to discussing.
STEP 3: Meet with your manager and discuss your proposed actions and deliverables. Adjust priorities and dates where necessary.
Remember, you only allotted 10 minutes, so stay under 10 minutes unless they decide to expand the meeting. The purpose is to ensure each of you are clear on what you will focus on in the next 30 to 60 days.
If there are significant discrepancies between what you and the manager think you should deliver, ask if you should schedule another time to discuss these issues in more detail, or if they have time now. Also, discuss how you two reached different conclusions on what is needed so it won’t happen again.
