SOLUTION:

Prioritizing Needs

PURPOSE: Based on family goals and values, each member prioritizes their needs (ex: personal, professional, financial), and determines which needs must be met first and how each person can help.

Time: < 30 Minutes

STEP 1: Before a family meeting.
Ask your family members to identify the top 3 needs they have right now and what resources (materials, money, advice, etc.) they need in order to be successful in their endeavors. For each need, family members should do the following:

  1. Describe why the resource is needed
  2. Outline the impact the resource will have on the individual’s success and well-being
  3. Identify what it will take to obtain the resource (time, money, etc.)
  4. Rank their top 3 resource needs in order of priority

STEP 2: During a family meeting

Each member shares their top 3 resource needs with the entire family.

STEP 3: Based on what each family member currently has going on, such as school, work, etc., as well as available resources, work with your family to prioritize which resource needs must be met first. The team should try to meet as many #1-ranked needs for each of the different family members as possible.

If a family member cannot have any of his or her top 3 needs met, the group should try to identify a different solution to help then be successful in his or her life.
