STEP 1: Write down what you are looking for in a dog. Do you want large or small? Active or docile? Puppy or older dog? What is your weight limit? Is it okay if he or she sheds? Do you have any pet dander allergies? If you have a roommate or significant other, discuss these types of questions with them also.

STEP 2: Once you have some parameters, start researching dogs and reviewing comments about the breed. Look for a dog rescue or pound in your area and see if they have the dog(s) you are looking for. If so, go by and meet/walk the dog to see if there is a connection.

STEP 3: Consider dog sitting for a friend, fostering a dog, etc. so you can see what it would really be like to have a dog to care for each and every day. Puppies can be like newborns, so you want to make sure you are ready for the commitment.

STEP 4: If you decide that getting a dog is right for you, find the dog, buy a crate, get his/her vaccinations, and pick up some food, toys and treats.

STEP 5: Enjoy your new furry friend, and all of the love and companionship they will provide. Proper training is necessary for most dogs to understand your and their role in the home, so investing in dog or puppy training course is highly recommended.
