Plan a Picnic

PURPOSE: Eat a meal outdoors and enjoy the sunshine or sit beneath the shade of your favorite tree. Picnics conjure up fun thoughts of family, food and laughter! Since it’s not something most people do regularly, enjoying a picnic will be seen as a special treat. That, in turn, will make them feel special too.

Time: 1 Hour

STEP 1: Determine who will be attending. Is it a big group, a family affair, or just two of you? For larger groups, consider renting out a pavilion at your local park and utilize the grills if available. For a more intimate affair, bring along a soft blanket and find a secluded spot near a lake or beneath a tree. Relax in a peaceful setting and spend some quality time with your loved ones.

STEP 2: Think about what is important to those who will be attending and what details or activities will make it an enjoyable and memorable experience. Bring a Frisbee, a book, or some craft supplies for entertainment. Pick the perfect background music, bring along their favorite flowers, provide games/toys, or bring a photo or a thank you note to show your appreciation for them and the role they play in your life. Touch on all of their senses to make a lasting impression.

STEP 3: Decide where it’s going to be and confirm the date is convenient for the other party. If you have the time, consider driving to a new, special location (somewhere in the mountains, at a lake, or a unique park in the next town over). Or keep it sweet and simple and visit the park nearest you and take time to take a walk or swing on the swings—it’s all about spending time together and making the other person feel important.

STEP 4: Purchase and set up everything necessary for your picnic. Order take-out from your favorite restaurant or go that extra step and share a homemade meal. Stop by the store for dessert or a bottle of wine if you’re feeling extra fancy. If necessary, recruit someone to help so you don’t have to do all of the preparing on your own. For larger groups, enlist each member to bring something to share—a dish, beverage option, camping chairs or blanket, or an outdoor activity.

STEP 5: Enjoy the moments. Take a picture to commit this event to memory and then send it (or frame it) to those in attendance.
