SOLUTION:

Know Your History

PURPOSE: Learn about your family health history so you and your doctor know where to pay special attention during your exams. If you are not aware of your family’s health history, now is a great time to ask the necessary questions to inform yourself.

Time: 1 Hour

STEP 1: Talk to your siblings and parents about their health issues, as well as the health issues of your grandparents. If this isn’t an option for you, look into using the ‘23 and Me DNA kit’.  Be aware if they had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, depression, heart challenges (attacks, strokes, palpitations), cancer, autoimmune disorders, learning disorders, etc.

STEP 2: Make your doctor aware of your family’s history. Read up on the challenges your family has faced so you can understand the symptoms and how to recognize them in your own life. Don’t let this information scare you but recognize its ability to empower you to take control of your health.

STEP 3: Tailor your life to not only be healthy, but to focus on any potential problem areas. For example, if your entire family has high cholesterol, you may want to get your cholesterol checked annually and eat a diet of foods that won’t increase your cholesterol or take supplements that are good for your cholesterol numbers. Being aware of potential threats or health risks grounded in real evidence from your families’ health history will provide you with knowledge of what to look for, therefore enabling you to identify any potential issues as soon as possible.
