Time: < 30 Minutes
STEP 1: Decide what you need to do for yourself, how long it will take, what arrangements need to be made to do it, what you need to do to prepare, etc. It may be as simple as throwing a workout bag in the car or finding childcare and a hotel for the weekend. You are the only one who knows what you truly need.
STEP 2: Make it happen. Pack it, schedule it, arrange it, buy it. Take the necessary steps to get it on the calendar and feel empowered by taking care of your needs.
STEP 3: Learn how to say “No” without feeling guilty. Don’t try to do everything for the people in your life. Saying “No” will free up some of your time and the person needing help will find someone else to assist. Saying no sometimes is a critical part of protecting yourself and your mental health from overload.
STEP 4: Make a list of the items in your life that you tolerate but are draining your energy and distracting you. Now think through how you can free yourself from doing them. It is easy to feel like we are the only ones capable of helping others or completing necessary tasks—with this mindset it is easy to get overwhelmed with “obligations” and to forget to make ourselves a priority. If necessary, recruit a friend to brainstorm with you.
STEP 5: Pay attention to what you watch, listen to, and read. Be selective and look to build yourself up and nourish your spirit, not “clutter your mind” with negativity. You will feel more confident, less stressed, and have a better mindset in order to excel in your life. When you are feeling great you will better support your family and friends. Be determined to make yourself a priority.
