Development StrategyĀ 

PURPOSE:Ā Create a development strategy and outline development actions to build capability. Determine how the employee will build the skills and capabilities needed for future roles and responsibilities.

Time: 1 Hour

STEP 1: Work with the team member to complete a Development Strategy and outline the following:

  1. What do they want to develop?
  2. How will this new capability help them be successful today or in the future?
  3. How fast do they need to build the targeted capability?
  4. What resources will be required to build the capability?

STEP 2: Discuss the IMPACT and TIMING of the new capabilities. 

STEP 3: Outline the targeted development actions which must be taken to ensure the capabilities get built before they are needed.  Be sure to check the plan... if the team member completes the development actions—will the new knowledge, skills, or abilities be built and increase his or her capability to perform? 

STEP 4: Identify the actions both you and the team member must take to ensure the targeted development actions are implemented.
