Career Exploration

PURPOSE: Meet with your employee to discuss the various career options available to the employee, as well as possible timeframes for his or her next career move.

Time: 1 Hour

STEP 1: With your employee, identify and record the following on the Career Exploration Worksheet:

  1. The available career options within the organization based on the employee’s skills and  capabilities, and desired career path
  2. For each career option, identify the type of movement option the career move offers (e.g., up, cross-functional assignment, moving to a new functional area, etc.)
  3. Determine the probable timeframe of each career move for the employee

STEP 2: Review the career options identified and determine if they include various movement options for the employee.  If not, what additional career moves are you forgetting?

STEP 3: Select the career movement options best suited for the employee based on career goals, current skills and capabilities, and movement timeframe.

STEP 4: Identify the actions both you and the employee should take to help the employee achieve the desired career move.
