STEP 1: Identify a job you are interested in or a specialty area you want to build.
STEP 2: With your manager, identify individuals in the organization who are in this position or have an expertise in the specialty area.
STEP 3: Ask the individual if he or she would be willing to have you shadow him or her for a meeting or during the day to learn about the job or specialty area.
STEP 4: When shadowing the expert, remember to do the following:
- Take notes
- Ask questions when appropriate
- Thank the person for his or her time
- Follow-up after the shadowing event to share how you have applied what you learned
STEP 5: Meet with your manager to share what you learned from shadowing the expert. Identify additional actions you can take to build off the knowledge or skills you learned from the expert.
