STEP 1: Use the Development Actions worksheet to outline your development interests by answering the following questions:
- Is there something you do “OK” now that you’d like to be great at in your next role?
- Is there technical knowledge you need to build right now to increase the likelihood of being selected for your next desired role?
- Where do you need more “depth” to make your next career move?
- Where do you need more “breadth” to make your next career move?
- Are there procedures you need to know for your next role?
- Will you need to manage more or less people in your next role? What skills or capabilities will you need to manage successfully?
STEP 2: Based on the answers to the questions above, identify the Development Actions that would best build the outlined skills and capabilities.
Possible Development Actions:
- Can you read something to build the skill?
- Can you practice the skill?
- Can you watch others perform the skill?
- Is there special training or certification required?
- Are there on-line resources you can tap into?
- Does the organization have a standard operating procedure for this skill?
- Is there an industry practice you can review?
- Do you know any experts you can tap into?
STEP 3: Share your Development Actions with your manager. Make upgrades to the plan and determine what actions both you and your manager must take to ensure you are able to successfully implement your outlined Development Actions.
