SOLUTION:

Creating Your Volunteering Brand

PURPOSEBuild your “Personal Brand” through your volunteerism to help create greater market value with current and future employers… while also filling a gap if you lack experience for jobs that interest you.

Time: < 30 Minutes

STEP 1: Include relevant volunteer experience on your resume. The best place to include volunteer experience is the "Work Experience" section if it's very relevant to the job, you've got very little paid experience, or a resume gap.

STEP 2: When volunteering with an organization request that your focus be around the skills you want to develop. This is a way to gain some required experience that you are not receiving otherwise. The organization may be open to your request since you are volunteering, and you might even find a mentor along the way.

STEP 3: TIP: Only 32% of applicants list volunteer work on a resume. Yet most managers prefer it. Put it on your resume, and you’re in the top third of job seekers!

STEP 4: If you’re unsure where to volunteer, animal shelter experience or Habitat for Humanity resume experience all look great to hiring managers. Add relevant bullet points to make the even better.
