SOLUTION:

Determine
the Cause

PURPOSE: Give back to those less fortunate than you. Make a difference in someone else’s life, gain a high level of internal satisfaction, and find social and emotional fulfillment.

Time: < 30 Minutes

STEP 1: Think about what causes are important to you and what categories you could help with that you are passionate about (ex: children, disabled, veterans, pets, the environment, clean water, FDA regulations, etc.). Ask your friends and family for support. Often times the most meaningful work to people is that which aligns with their fundamental beliefs or involves an interest or hobby of theirs. Is there a particular issue plaguing others in the world that you find especially interesting? Spend some time thinking about where you’d like to make a difference and what that work will mean to you.

STEP 2: Once you have selected a cause or issue you want to support, research organizations in your area for places to volunteer. If you don’t have the time to volunteer physically, consider making donations or find a way to give back online.

STEP 3: Gather information about organizations that support the cause you have selected. Read their mission statements, values, and learn about the work they’re doing. Be sure to understand where they get their money and how they are using it. Be intentional in your decision-making process and reach out to a representative with any questions you have.

STEP 4: After selecting your preferred organization, determine the amount of time you are willing or able to devote to volunteering. If you would prefer to make donations instead you can set up automatic donations.

STEP 5: Many non-profit organizations send out monthly newsletters to volunteers with information about upcoming events, work being done by the organization, and other opportunities to provide help. Sign up to receive the newsletter and forward it to friends/family or post information about the organization on social media.
