SOLUTION:

Fear is an Illusion

PURPOSE: Assess what influences are present in your life that are directly or indirectly creating or perpetuating fear. Acknowledge them as a first step in dismantling their pull and regaining control over their negative impact.

Time: < 30 Minutes

STEP 1: Acknowledge. Think about 3 things that create fear in your life. What causes those fears? Is it something you experienced that brings up negative thoughts? Is it something you saw in the news or in a movie that makes you fearful? Is it due to something someone said to you? Maybe it’s that you KNOW you should do something, but you simply DON’T want to do it. First, determine where the fears are coming from and if they are truly valid. Once you have determined three valid fears present in your life, write them down. Our mind is a very powerful tool…so much so, that we are actually the ones responsible for creating the fear within us. Our upbringing, physical surroundings, society and the people we surround ourselves with all contribute to either reinforcing or making us fearful.

STEP 2: Address.

  • If it is valid, consider what is necessary to protect yourself (i.e. set a strong boundary, get an alarm, involve external help if necessary, etc.).
  • If it is highly unlikely, decrease the negativity that you may be obtaining from the media (watching, reading, or hearing) that is putting these thoughts in your head.
  • If it is something you simply don’t want to do (ex: saying no to someone or something, apologizing, having that difficult conversation, working out, etc.) Challenge yourself to do it anyway. FACE YOUR FEARS! When you do what you don’t want to do, you take back control of your life and stop letting fear or inactivity control you.

STEP 3: Create a SMART Goal. Select one thing that creates a valid fear in your life and make a plan to regain control of that part of your life. Use this outline to create a SMART goal (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound).

STEP 4: Enlist a coach or trusted individual to support you when you are struggling and to hold you accountable to your SMART goal.
