STEP 1: Think about your audience. Who are you going to see, what is the venue, and how do you want them to “see” you? Based on your answers, determine the appropriate outfit to wear. Be sure to dress in such a way that still maintains your individuality but push yourself to go the extra step and to elevate your look for the occasion.
STEP 2: Think about the small details…
- Are your nails and cuticles trimmed?
- Do you need to shave?
- Do you need lotion for your hands, face or body?
- Is your shirt pressed/ironed?
- Do you need a haircut or highlight?
- Do your socks match?
- Is your hair washed?
STEP 3: Wear comfortable shoes. Nothing messes with a great look more than being unable to walk in your shoes or having a loose sole.
STEP 4: Walk with confidence. Hold you head up – if you are looking at your feet or the ground, it does not portray confidence. Smile at others as you walk by (if you are in an area that appreciates it). Carry yourself with poise and confidence, and most importantly—relax.
STEP 5: Lastly, when appropriate, look the person in the eyes and give them a firm handshake. If necessary, practice with friends or family to get a gut check on your handshake.
