SOLUTION:

Build a Garden

PURPOSE: Build a garden for both the therapeutic and health benefits. Grow your own fruits and vegetables to cook with, increase your vitamin D intake from the sun (don’t forget your sunscreen), lower your stress levels, elevate your mood, and interact with other people through use of community gardens.

Time: < 2 Hours

STEP 1: Talk to a gardener or someone at a store that can give you some pointers on how to get started. Assess the space available in your backyard, as well as, the amount of natural light inside your home for indoor plants. Often times people choose to grow their herbs indoors, which requires either a growing system or an enclosed space with a lamp—if you have a spare room or closet, this could be an exciting new endeavor. If you are a novice at gardening, request recommendations to help you get started such as beginner fruits/vegetables/seeds, basic equipment and soil type, etc.

STEP 2: Decide what food you would like to have in your garden and make sure that it will grow well in your soil and the location of your garden. Enlist professional help or opinions as needed and purchase the necessary supplies to get started.

STEP 3: Enjoy building your garden, knowing that you are making a healthy decision, as well as a good financial decision. If you would prefer a more social activity, invite a friend or spouse to help you, or consider looking into a community garden.

STEP 4: Admire and appreciate your new garden and be on the lookout for that first tomato!
