STEP 1: Research self-defense classes in your area. Read their mission and goals, as well as customer ratings and comments. Look at your local rec center, private gyms in your area or simply search online.
STEP 2: Once you find some you are interested in, call them to hear an explanation of their classes to see if it speaks to you. Ask if they have a “try-before-you-buy” option to see if you like it. Go with which one best meets your needs. Consider at least 5–10 classes so you can gain some strong defense tactics.
STEP 3: Invite a friend to see if they’d like to go with you. It helps with accountability and having a practice partner during the class.
STEP 4: Attend the classes and give it your all. Make the most of your time in these classes and don’t be afraid to ask questions and accept feedback about the progress you’re making. These tips and tricks can protect you and your loved ones. You can also share these techniques with others to pay it forward—spread the wealth of knowledge with others and refer them to the leader of your class if they would like to also enroll in the class.
STEP 5: You can also talk to others in the class to see what they do (besides the class) to increase their safety and confidence. These people can be your support system and often have various techniques and advice that they will happily share with you.
