SOLUTION:

Focusing on Just One

PURPOSE: Once a week, identify a family member or friend who is struggling and make it your goal for the week to help support them. When we are there for our friends and family, we feel proud and accomplished.

Time: < 30 Minutes

STEP 1: At the beginning of the week, identify one friend or family member with an issue or problem that you can help them with.

STEP 2: Reach out to that person either in person, over the phone, or send them a text expressing your concern for them and your desire to help support them. Plan a time to meet during the week in order to support them through this challenging time.

STEP 3: When this person is speaking about their challenges be sure to listen and ask clarifying questions as needed. Remember that many people are really just looking for someone to listen to them so be careful not to talk over them or move at your own pace. If they want to, you can suggest brainstorming solutions or ways you can help them to improve their situation.

STEP 4: Continue to check in with this person over the next few weeks to see how they are progressing. Pick a new person to help support every week or so, depending on the degree of their struggles and what time you have available.
