SOLUTION:

The Eyes Have It

PURPOSE: Give your focused attention and pay attention to your nonverbal communication when communicating with others. It will help you to listen and understand others better, as well as make them feel important and heard.

Time: < 30 Minutes

STEP 1: In every conversation, make sure you are looking directly into the other person's eyes while talking. Looking at your phone, a TV or computer gives the indication that you don't care or they are not a priority. Turn your body towards the person speaking, don’t cross your arms and reduce your fidgeting or foot tapping as much as you can to show that you’re engaged in what they have to say.

STEP 2: If you find yourself in a situation where you can’t look at them directly (you are driving, or in the middle of an email), tell them that you need a few minutes to complete your current task so that you can give them your undivided attention. They will appreciate your honesty and intention going into the conversation.

STEP 3: Once you’ve completed your task, turn to them and look them in the eyes. Ask questions when necessary and nod as you listen so they’ll know they have your attention. When communicating with another person, you need to be focused on them in order to pick up on social cues, nonverbal communication, and energy changes. People communicate in multiple ways and being aware of body language can reveal a lot about what’s going on that may not be said out loud. Be aware of how you are responding to them nonverbally, and request feedback after the conversation if you want to improve your listening skills.
