Time: 30 Minutes
STEP 1: Identify a block of time you can meet with this person over the next two weeks—plan for at least a 15-minute meeting.
STEP 2: Send the following email to the person or introduce the “Coaching Actions” exercise to them in person.
“As you know, I am working on improving my coaching capabilities. To understand what coaching actions would be helpful to you, I’d like to have a quick 15-minute discussion with each of you in the next two weeks. During this discussion, we will identify one coaching action I can take to help you achieve your goals, build your capabilities, or provide you with better feedback.
Before we meet, I need some help from you…
- Please schedule yourself for a 15-minute discussion within the next two days.
- Be prepared to discuss what coaching actions you believe will help you achieve your goals, build your capabilities, or create a greater understanding of your current situation.
During the discussion, we’ll review your current needs and identify one coaching action I can take to help you be successful. I care about you and want to be of service in any way that I can.”
STEP 3: Once you have met with the person you selected, identify the top coaching action you will take for them and record the action on the Coaching Actions worksheet.
STEP 4: Follow-up with that person regularly to identify how the coaching action has helped them in their life. Determine if additional coaching actions may be needed to ensure this person is successful.
