STEP 1: Be available to help a loved one with something they’ve mentioned or something you’ve noticed. Take note when you hear that something is needed. Don’t feel like you need to help with everything in their life—start small and work your way up towards larger, more demanding tasks. The intensity of your involvement will not determine how much you care for that person, so don’t feel any pressure to take on a task that is outside of your ability/comfort zone. Consider bringing them a home cooked meal, surprising them by coming over to help clean their garage, washing their car, mowing their lawn, or simply picking them up to enjoy their favorite dessert.
STEP 2: Check your availability (and theirs) to see when would be most convenient to help. You know if a scheduling a time is better/easier/more convenient than surprising them.
STEP 3: Bring all of the materials that you’ll need so you won’t have to leave to get more. If you end up forgetting a certain tool or material you need to complete the task, simply choose something else that is small and quick to do in that moment and return at a later date with the tools you need.
STEP 4: Let them know they are worth your time and attention and that you are choosing to do this because you care about them and want to do something nice for them. They will feel more connected to you and appreciative of your honesty and will likely share how they feel cared for and important as well.
STEP 5: Continue to listen for/be aware of other opportunities that might present themselves for you be of support. If this person’s love language is acts of service, you will have hit the jackpot.
