Preparing
Healthy Meals

PURPOSE: Prepare nutritious meals for you and your family to expand the healthy foods and drinks your loved ones are enjoying. Invite your family members to join you in the planning, shopping, and cooking steps to increase the time you spend together, while sharing in the joys of prioritizing your collective health and well being.

Time: 1 Hour

STEP 1: Determine what changes you want to make in you and your loved one’s eating habits. You might decide to consume more protein and fruits, and less gluten, processed or fried foods… whatever the adjustment, do some research. What can you cook in lieu of your usual menu items? If you are the main food preparer you can easily prepare only what sounds good to you, but it is beneficial to ask for input and opinions on what people want to eat so you don’t create backlash.

STEP 2: Research ideas via Google or health related sites. You’ll get a plethora of information to use. From there, you can start researching recipes that you and the family will enjoy. Something interactive like making steamed dumplings or growing a garden can increase everyone’s excitement surrounding eating healthier, while spending quality time with your loved ones in the process.

STEP 3: Take small steps; don’t feel like you have to change everything at once. Begin with making adjustments to the menu two days a week rather than stopping something cold turkey. (Going from gluten full to gluten free in a week may cause a revolt if you have picky eaters in the group.)

STEP 4: Take the feedback you get. If your changes are well received, great! If not, make necessary adjustments and/or try a different recipe. Ask for patience from those you are cooking for; hopefully they will be understanding since you are trying to make them healthier mentally and physically.

STEP 5: Ask for suggestions from those who have blazed the trail before you. Chances are, if you post something on social media, others have made similar changes and will have some great recipe ideas.
