STEP 1: Identify the skill(s) or topic you want to focus on and think about the people in your life who are involved in that area. Pick one or two people who can provide information on your interests, provide coaching to you, or who could act as a mentor.
STEP 2: Use the following to help select someone who can help you:
- A Position Above You… Who do you know in a position above you who has done something in the past or is doing something now that you would like to do?
- A Friend… Do you have a friend who has done something in the past or is doing something now that you would like to do?
- An Acquaintance… Are you acquainted with, or do you share a mutual friend with someone who has done something in the past or is doing something now that you would like to do?
STEP 3: Once you have selected a person you would like to act as your mentor, reach out and ask if they would be willing to discuss your interest in the relevant topic. Be sure to communicate to them what your goals are, and how this mentorship would benefit you as well as them. Work together to establish what this mentorship will look like.
STEP 4: Meet with this person on a regular basis and track your progress.
