STEP 1: Talk to your manager about identifying a senior leader in your organization who would be willing to discuss the organization’s mission and purpose with you and your team. If you or your team have suggestions for a speaker, share them!
STEP 2: Ask your manager how you can help, or if you are the manager, find the right person to talk with your team and get it on the calendar.
STEP 3: As a team, select the questions you would like the Senior Leader to answer during the discussion. Use the list below to help identify the questions. Note: You may want to give these questions to the leader before the discussion.
Leadership Discussion Questions
- Has the mission or purpose of the organization changed? What is the impact?
- What areas of our business will grow? What areas of our business will decline?
- What areas of our business will change significantly?
- What areas of the business will be “outsourced” to strategic partners, vendors, and/or other organizations?
- What business opportunities have recently emerged? Have we made the decision to pursue or not pursue the opportunities?
- What are the key strategic initiatives being attacked?
- What organization capabilities need to be built in the next 18 months?
- What organization capabilities are becoming less important to our long-term success?
- What CORE (Central, Main, Foundation) COMPETENCIES (Capability, Unique Performance Capacity, Demonstrated Performance) will lead to our success and create a competitive advantage?
STEP 4: During the discussion, team members should ask the identified questions, as well as share how they believe the team supports the organization strategy.
STEP 5: Outline actions the team can take to increase their impact on the organization’s success. Thank the leader for his or her time.
