STEP 1: You may have several organizations to which you would like to give monetary donations this year (or next). Look at your budget to determine how much money you would like to donate. Contributing one large sum of money takes time and discipline, so treat it as a short-term or long-term financial goal, depending on how much you want to give. Work it into your budget, as you would save for a vacation, new computer, etc.
STEP 2: Determine how you would like to distribute the funds between the organizations. Equal amounts to each organization? Or one large donation to your top choice and smaller donations to the others?
STEP 3: Determine when you would like to schedule the payments to each organization. If you spread it out quarterly, it won’t be such a hit to the pocketbook.
STEP 4: Another great option is to request that friends and family donate to your charity of choice instead of buying you a gift. You can receive email notifications each time a donation is made for your birthday/anniversary/other—Facebook has a really great tool that allows your followers to donate to the organization directly from their Facebook feed. It shows the goal you selected and tracks the progress.
