Plan a Getaway

PURPOSE: Plan to get away from your day-to-day so you can fully relax and make time for what is important. Schedule a vacation to have something to be excited about and look forward to.

Time: < 1 Hour

STEP 1: Think about where you’d like to go and what you want to do. Maybe there is a family member or friend who lives in another city or state that you haven’t seen in a while, or maybe there is a destination you’ve always wanted to go to. Vacations are an incredible way to focus on the great opportunities in your life. They are also the perfect time to create new memories and increase your happiness while decreasing your stress level.

STEP 2: Once you have some ideas, research those activities and events in your cities of choice. Look for deals online, and ask your friends/social media circles for suggestions. Your price point and timeline will help guide you in your decision-making process, as well as suggestions from those you plan to invite. Look for convenient days, flights and hotel availability, tour times, etc. Give your employer formal notice of your upcoming vacation dates as appropriate.

STEP 3: Have a countdown on your calendar to the day you’re leaving. It’s important to always have something on your calendar that you are looking forward to. This will help you get excited and stay on track with your savings plan and preparations.

STEP 4: On your departure day, stop by a health food store to grab some trail mix or healthy snacks for the ride. Bring a book to read or a Sudoku book to play if that peaks your interest.

STEP 5: Take time to appreciate where you are and who is with you. Show gratitude for all of your blessings. Really savor your time spent away—be grateful for the time you have to enjoy this moment, as well as what you get to see, hear, feel, and experience. Don’t let this trip pass you by. Remember to notice new and interesting things you see and/or people you meet. Push yourself to try something new that you wouldn’t normally try at home…this trip is all about enjoying the moments, so keep your eyes open and invite novel experiences.

STEP 6: Reflect on your trip. Answer questions like what you did, what you learned, what new things you tried, what you’d like to do again, your favorite memory, etc.
