Time: < 30 Minutes
STEP 1: Start with each of you sharing one skill or capability that you would like to build in order to help you achieve a personal goal. Have you always wanted to be a better cook? Or maybe you’ve always wanted to learn to dance the salsa. As you share the desired skill or capability, do the following:
- Describe the skill or capability to your significant other
- Outline how the skill or capability will help you achieve personal success
- Share your current capabilities and desired expertise—it’s important to know where you’re starting from
STEP 2: After you have shared your skill, spend five minutes brainstorming different development actions each person can take to build his or her capabilities. When brainstorming remember to:
- Stick to the time limit—it will be easy to go past the five minutes
- Do not evaluate ideas—this is not the time to say if an idea is good or bad, no matter how crazy the idea
- Record every idea!
STEP 3: After the meeting, each of you will review your “brainstormed” list and identify the action(s) you feel will most directly help you to grow your desired skill or capability.
STEP 4: Be sure to take the time to follow up with your significant other to assess how you both are progressing. Share with one another what actions you chose to implement, describe how it is going, and ask each other for additional help or support if you desire it.
