STEP 1: Take some time and reflect on your own personal style. What do you like about the way you dress? Is it your growing collection of unique jewelry, or your quirky, stylish glasses? You may like someone else’s style or the way they dress, and you can get some tips from them, but don’t take over their “look”. Your efforts to elevate your style don’t have to break the bank. Getting rid of pieces you no longer wear or that are old and worn out is a great first step.
STEP 2: Pick out a few items from your wardrobe that you feel best represent YOU. This will help you get an idea of what your personal style has become over time, and what you want to maintain about your look. Determine the look that you want to be known for…this may be an overall look or may change day-by-day. Think about why you want to portray that specific look and how to best pull it off.
STEP 3: Determine if your style choice is appropriate for where you are headed that day. If not, take a change of clothes so you won’t be uncomfortable or cause others to be uncomfortable. Your look doesn’t need to be extravagant or over-the-top; make sure you are comfortable and do what feels right. Don’t wear something that doesn’t fit or that is difficult to move or sit in.
STEP 4: When you shop, look for staples…staples are items you can always wear and mix and match with other things. A staple for the week may be a nice pair of black pants, whereas a staple for the weekend might be a “nice” pair of jeans and a sweater. You can spend a little more on staples since you will get a lot of mileage out of them. Not sure where to start? Find a nice, sturdy pair of black or brown boots or some stylish sneakers that can be worn with multiple outfits and during multiple seasons—it’s all about quality and versatility.
