STEP 1: Check your batteries in your smoke and carbon dioxide detectors to make sure they are working. A good rule of thumb is to change them on New Year’s Day – that way you never forget to do it. Forming habits surrounding routine maintenance such as this will ensure that it gets done.
STEP 2: Make sure your alarm system is working. Try opening a window to see if the alarm goes off. Also, confirm that the security company calls you when it goes off. This will give you security that they will know if it ever goes off.
STEP 3: Have an escape route. If there is a fire, you need to have a plan, and all family members need to know that plan. Go over it with them before it is ever necessary.
STEP 4: Have you had any construction done and someone outside of your family has a key to your home? Change your locks so you know who has a key. If you have a garage door key pad, consider moving it to a hidden area on the side of the house and changing the code to increase safety.
STEP 5: Lastly, consider getting security cameras installed in your homes. Technology has advanced to where they are accessible and affordable for many families. This way, you can see who arrives at your door, as well as any other comings and goings.
