STEP 1: Take a look at your list of Facebook friends. Are there some you barely know? Some you never see posts from? Others who offend or frustrate you when you see their posts? If you feel this way about any of your friends, it might be time to start un-friending or un-following as appropriate. Surround yourself with positive and respectful people and return the favor by posting equally positive and uplifting things to your timeline.
STEP 2: Once you have gotten rid of the negative people from your Facebook friends list, you can begin to look for new friends, or friends of friends that have your same passions. It may be a great motivator for you to finally reach out to that acquaintance you’ve had for years or to reconnect with an old friend.
STEP 3: Make your De-clutter Detox an ongoing exercise—if you are scrolling through social media and see someone who you no longer care to be friends with online, it’s okay to un-follow them. Over time you will see your engagement with and attitude towards social media improve without all of the negativity from before.
STEP 4: If you have had your social media account for a long time and feel overwhelmed by the amount of people to un-friend, etc., consider deactivating your current account and start from scratch. You have most likely changed significantly from the person you were when you first created your account and this new account can be seen as a “clean slate”. Be intentional with those whom you add to your new account and make your profile exactly how you want it to be.
