SOLUTION:

Encourage Others

PURPOSE: Use your social media voice for good—the world needs it. Explore the ideas below for ways to support your friends and family online.

Time: < 30 Minutes

STEP 1: Look for videos, quotes or articles that give others a reason to smile. Try to “out-do” yourself on the funny-meter each time, so people will look forward to seeing your laugh-worthy posts. Create a group chat on Facebook Messenger, post to your Facebook status or even send sweet or funny articles via email. Any way you choose to reach out to your followers with positive content will encourage and remind people to stay positive through these challenging times, where we are constantly bombarded with negativity.

STEP 2: If you’d like to take a more empowering and uplifting approach, consider sharing an article/link that will provide information to be helpful to others. Providing your followers with a resource to help them take action on a relevant cause or use their voice to improve a situation will help everyone to feel less helpless in a time where so much feels out of our control. Encourage your friends and family (especially the youth) to stay educated and up to date on positive political work being done, both locally and nationally. Or post a link to a disaster-relief fund in your area or across the world.

STEP 3: Write an encouraging comment or send a message to someone who is struggling…or better yet, pick up the phone and call them. Utilize the internet in order to keep up with what’s going on in your friends/families’ lives. Take the time to show that you care about and support them and make a huge difference in their attitude and morale.

STEP 4: Keep your political views to yourself. Those who know you know what you believe in and sharing your hatred for the “other party” is not going to win anyone over to your way of thinking. Instead of adding to the controversial and negative discourse surrounding the volatility of our nation’s politics, focus on spreading positivity in your internet-presence.

STEP 5: Share pictures full of love and happiness. People like to see that others are happy. It may even motivate them to create more happiness in their own lives. If you don’t have many recent “happy memory” photos, make it a point to create some and refresh your post with some smiles and laughter.
