STEP 1: If you are passionate about an organization, do a deep dive. Take a look at their website, but also conduct some considerable research on the larger topic and the efforts being made by people right now to improve the conditions or to further the cause. Familiarize yourself with your passion and what you can do to invest in it, both in the long and short term. Chances are, you will connect with at least one person (if not more) that is making a difference and could give you some advice or lend a helping hand.
STEP 2: Post information you find during your research on your social media outlet. Share why it is important to you and why you believe others should be aware of the cause. Be sure to post a link to the organization’s website and any helpful websites to supplement the organization’s site. Answer any questions your followers may have. If no one asks about it, that’s okay! Keep posting or sharing articles as things come up to continue the information flow. Trust that even if people aren’t actively commenting on your post, your efforts are spreading the word to people who wouldn’t otherwise see it. As more people view the information, the more they may show interest. Don’t give up.
STEP 3: If an event comes up that people can attend in order to learn more about the organization, share it online, but also reach out to a couple of specific people to see if they would be interested in joining you – this approach will be especially effective if they have liked your posts or commented on them in the past.
STEP 4: Look for ways to mentor others who are interested in your passion and see how you can help them grow and develop. Be mindful not to control or judge other people’s approach to an organization you are involved in—allow people to create their own relationship to a cause; not everyone’s approach will match yours, and that’s okay. Look at it as an opportunity to learn and grow from them as well.
