Time: < 1 Hour
STEP 1: Before a team meeting, ask your team members to capture the skills and capabilities they would like to build or develop over the next year.
STEP 2: During a team meeting, create an expert database grid on a flipchart or dry erase board, and list the skills and capabilities team members would like to develop.
STEP 3: As a team, determine if there are additional skills or capabilities all team members need to successfully deliver the team’s desired results.
STEP 4: Team members identify individuals who have expertise in the identified skills and capabilities. An expert is someone who has:
- Successfully applied the skill or capability in a previous role or work project
- Is asked by others to use the skill or capability to solve an issue
- Consistently delivers a high level of performance when using the skill or capability
STEP 5: List the expert, a description of the person’s background, and his or her contact information on the grid.

STEP 6: Summarize the information to create a team Expert Database for everyone to use. You may want to leave the “database” up for a week to give team members time to add additional experts before the information is summarized for the team.
