STEP 1: Answer these questions: Are your pets around other pets regularly? On occasion? How to they act during these interactions? You want to make sure that they are prepared for those exchanges, whether it’s on a walk, when company is over, or if you are on a vacation.
STEP 2: Determine what behavior needs to improve, then decide the best course of action. Does your pet need training to walk on a leash or get potty trained? Do you need to have them in a crate to meet some other dogs they’ll be around during the holidays? Are they urinating with excitement on your guests? These are important behaviors to get under control.
STEP 3: Once you’ve determined the best course of action, start the process. If they need crate training, start it today. If they need continence support, research your options. This will be helpful and healthy for all parties involved.
STEP 4: Once you work on the behavior challenges, you can better socialize your pet without concerns of a potentially negative outcome. Be patient with them. Like us, change can be uncomfortable and take time.
STEP 5: Check out “Meet-ups” online where others pull together people and their pets for gathering at a park – a great way to socialize for both you and your pet. If you can’t find one near your area, create the Meet-up yourself!
