PURPOSE: Create and post a “Department Goal Grid” showing how each department’s goals and work priorities contribute to the organization’s purpose and mission.

Time: 1 Hour 

STEP 1: Review the organization’s mission, strategy, and key initiatives. Summarize key points (“Drive innovation, customer focus”) in a spreadsheet. 

List out all the organization departments that intersect or communicate that you would need information from on the spreadsheet in a grid/table format. 

STEP 2: Email 1–2 representatives from each department (Marketing, Sales, IT, etc.): “Please share your department’s top 3 goals and priorities by [date].” Log responses in the spreadsheet. If applicable, note how each aligns with current organization-wide goals. 

STEP 3: Share the grid in a online space that all departments have access to (Slack channel, etc.): “View our Department Goal Grid to see how we align with the mission.” Include instructions for accessing and updating.

STEP 4: Review the grid to ensure that all departments have updated their goals and strategies. Reach out to representatives again if they have not logged anything. 

NOTE: This can be used by all employees to ensure that they are able to connect with other departments, or to easily see what others are working on to work and communicate in the most effective way.Â
