STEP 1: Think about the people in your life.
- What skills and capabilities do they want to develop? If you don’t know, ask them.
- What are their career goals?
- What are your strengths and capabilities?
STEP 2: If you are looking to mentor someone in a more professional sense, reach out to friends who might know some young adults in high school or college who might be interested in a mentorship. Teaching and educating young people can help them and they can benefit from your knowledge, skills, and experiences in your field.
STEP 3: Ask the person if he or she would like for you to mentor him or her on a particular set of skills or career goals.
STEP 4: Meet with the individual on a regular basis either face-to-face or on the phone to provide guidance, insight, feedback and coaching. Encourage them to ask you questions over time and check in with them to gauge the impact you’re making on their experience.
